You’ve tested HIV-negative! Well done for taking control of your sexual health. But this is just the beginning. Here’s how to stay negative and avoid common mistakes
If you’ve tested HIV-negative but were recently exposed to HIV, it might be too early for the virus to show up. This is known as the window period. You may need to test again in 1 to 3 months to be sure. But even if you have not been exposed to HIV before, after testing negative avoid any further risk and speak to a healthcare provider if you feel unwell.
Common mistakes to avoid
1. Thinking you're in the clear for good
Testing negative doesn’t mean you’re immune. Keep testing regularly - especially if you have new partners or potential exposure.
2. Skipping protection
Condoms are still one of the best ways to protect yourself and others. Use them consistently and correctly, especially if you don't know your partner’s status. Check out our “Using condoms to prevent HIV page” for tips.
3. Not considering PrEP
PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is another way to prevent HIV. It’s a great option if you're at higher risk or don’t always use condoms. Talk to a health provider to see if it’s right for you and you can also check our website on “What is the right PrEP option for me?”.
4. Not acting after a risky moment
If you had unprotected sex or shared needles? PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis) can help if started within 72 hours. Don’t wait - visit a clinic right away!
Stay in control
Here’s how to keep protecting yourself:
- Test regularly, especially if you're sexually active or have multiple partners.
- Talk openly with partners about HIV and testing.
- Find support, healthcare providers and community services can help you stay on track.
Knowing your status is a powerful step. Celebrate it by staying informed, making safer choices, and taking action to protect your sexual health - and your future.
