The five most common myths about HIV side effects
Myths and misinformation about antiretroviral (ARV) side effects can prevent people living with HIV from starting or staying on treatment.
Here are five common myths—and the facts behind them:
- ARVs are poison – side effects are usually mild and temporary
- ARVs make you put on weight – small changes are normal and often a sign of better health
- ARVs cause disfigurement – older drugs caused this, but modern ARVs do not
- ARVs cause mood swings and poor sleep – this is rare with newer medications
- ARVs damage your liver or heart – this is uncommon and linked to drugs that are rarely used today
